The Puritan Society differs immensely compared to the day of age we live in today. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, we get a taste of how different Puritan Society is and how lies, lust, and greed can turn any situation into chaos. We see the protagonist Abigail Williams, whose parents were killed by indians and is now adopted by her uncle Reverend Parris. The Crucible starts out with Reverend Parris attending to his daughter Betty who is deathly sick. Parris is trying to figure out what could have made Betty this sick, while the town is buzzing over a heavy rumor that their is witchcraft being passed around the town. “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(Miller,148). Abigail says this to the other girls which proves that she is fearful for herself of what could happen if they are found guilty for witchcraft. The quote also points out that she is extremely selfish because she does not have any care for the people she accuses and kills, but she only cares for herself and is young and ignorant about the situation she is on the brink of causing. It is also obvious that Abigail has not a love, but a lust for John Proctor. John is haunted by his past when he had a softness for Abigail and regrets it because it is not the Godly way to live. He does not love Abigail and wants to rebuild his marriage with Elizabeth, but Abigail has convinced herself that she loves John and if she falsely accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft she would be hanged and she could have the potential to take John 's hand in marriage. Abigail is proven to be a very talented liar and her motivations for false accusations turn out to be successful by the end of the play, except for the execution of John Proctor which backfired on her because that made nobody the winner. Abigail as we know is a gifted liar and the choices she makes that changes the outcome of the play is her consistent way of lying instead of telling the truth. “I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus, I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand, I saw Sarah Good with the Devil, I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil, I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil”(Miller, 162). This quote from Abigail is trying to lie her way out of being in trouble for witchcraft, and will cause all the people mentioned their life. Other lies ABigail has told is that she was only dancing in the forest last night and she didn 't drink blood, she still has an untarnished reputation in Salem, she tells Parris how bad of a person Elizabeth is, and every time she is in the courthouse she repetitively lies to the jury about her visions and brainwash from the Devil. Although Abigail is tricky and naive, she is a compulsive liar thats reputation is an awful one to have in the town of Salem during Puritan times, but when she got the respect and power she thrived for she gained it in the wrong sense by lying which at the end of the play backfires on her as she is forced to leave town and she is responsible for the death of John
