The Crucible Analysis

The Crucible was a play that was written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The Crucible was written in a time when paranoia rose in American society because of worries that the Soviet Union 's communist ways would infiltrate the United States. This led Arthur Miller to comment on this situation by comparing it to the Salem Witch Trials by writing The Crucible. In Arthur Miller’s play, he uses all of the definitions of the word, “Crucible” throughout his entire play. The one definition of the word, “Crucible” that Arthur Miller used that stood out, particularly in his play was “The Light placed in front of The Crucifix.” “The Light” in Arthur Miller’s text represented how god could save and help sinners by bathing them in his holy light. In act one of The Crucible, Abigail had just blamed Tituba for bewitching her and Betty and conspiring with the devil to do so. After, Tituba realizes that she can’t take the blame off of her, Tituba plays along with Abigail’s allegations and confesses to conspiring with the devil in hopes of not being punished as severely as she would have if she denied Abigail’s allegations and was still accused in the end. After confessing, Reverend Hale says to Tituba “Now Tituba, I know that when we bind ourselves to Hell it is very hard to break with it. We are going to help you tear yourself …show more content…
“The Light” in Arthur Miller’s text represented how god could save and help sinners by bathing them in his holy light and John Proctor’s actions to help to show those in power to have mercy. While the crucifix in Arthur Miller’s play represented the Puritans devotion to religion and how the puritan ideology of always sticking to religion would do more bad than good and cloud one’s
