In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, taking place in Salem, Massachusetts 1692, Abigail Williams along with many other girls claimed to have been possessed by the devil accusing many citizens of witchcraft. John Proctor 's wife Elizabeth was one of the accused. After Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, he is portrayed as a sinner, but he was willing to sacrifice his name and pride to reincarnate his soul and save his love. You will want the bad once more, but your heart will also stop you from repeating it. He also shows the guilt of the sin that stays with you. John Proctor has gone into town to see what all the talk in town is about Betty being bewitched. When he arrived at Betty 's house, Abigail Williams was their. She started talking to him, telling him that she thinks of him at night and she knows John thinks of her to. John gently presses Abigail away from him and firmly says “child” this causes Abigail to yell at him “ How do you call me child” and that is when John Proctor says “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut of my hands before I’ll ever touch for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby.”Pg 22. John proctor admits that he does think of Abby from time to time but he will never touch her again. He lusts for her but he is fighting his lust because he does not want to lose his wife and his good name for such sin. In the act 3, Hale paid a visit to John and Elizabeth Proctor’s house to question their faith in god and see if they are involved in any witchcraft. Hale and Proctor sitting at the dining room table and Elizabeth standing close by, Hale asks John if he knew the 10 commandments. John Proctor shows the good in him, but while doing so he commits to a bad action. Proctor 's reputation was good in Salem but now it is tarnished and all his attempts for good won 't show any results. Proctor has forced Mary Warren to confess to the court about the truth about Abigail Williams and the other girls. After Mary warren confesses to the court that Abigail is a lier, the girls start chaotic screams and accuse Mary of being a witch. Marry then pointing at John Proctor says “you 're the Devil 's man”. Mary warren accuses John proctor in an effort to divert attention away from the herself. John proctor was trying to show the court the truth about the witch trials and Abigail but in doing so he himself got accuse. His threats to Mary Warren was not an act of good it was an act of evil, but he was aiming for good results. Proctor goes to the court with Mary Warren to save Elizabeth 's life and the lives of the others that were accused. Elizabeth turns out to be pregnant so she will live mother year, but John doesn 't stop there. John is accused of trying to overthrow the court because he wanted the charges of the others to be dropped. Proctor tells the court “These are my friends. Their wives are also accused. John Proctor 's wife will survive and will not be hung, but Proctor doesn 't want to stop their. He wants to help all the accused. This shows the good in John Proctor, but no one else sees it as good.
