Characterization Of Abigail Williams In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

In the play, The Crucible by Author Miller, you experience a thrilling tale. It is full of excitement and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The play is about a group of teenage girls that are caught dancing in the forest. They are caught by reverend Paris and he accuses them of doing witch craft. Among one of the teenage girls in the group is his niece and her name is Abigail Williams. She was the leader of the group and persuaded all the girls to dance in the forest. She gets an unexpected visit from John Proctor a local farmer she used to work for. She no longer worked for him because they had an affair and his wife Elizabeth had found out. He comes up with an opportunity to end the whole thing by having Elizabeth make John Proctor to confess. She is willing to do it and john agrees only if they didn’t imprison anybody else. Reverend Hale explains to him that it will be made public. He doesn’t like this because he was already embarrassed in public. Danforth tries to ask him why he doesn’t want this and John says, “Because it’s my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself into lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (lines 721-730). He explains that he cannot live with himself anymore. He admits that he lies but that isn’t enough to change his fate. He is realizing how he has been this whole time and he is letting it all out. He tells him that he has been lying and he isn’t even worth the dust on the feet of those who hang. He puts himself below everyone because he has lost hope. John Proctor decides to tear up his confession and he goes to the gallows with the others to be hanged. In the beginning he never cared for anyone but himself. He had an affair with a younger woman and never told his wife. She found out on her own. He still cared about the girl he had an affair with but when she accused his wife of witch craft he changed. He started to realize that he was being selfish and he started to take a stand against this foolish act. He started to take a stand when he told Abigail he would never touch her again. When his wife was arrested, John started to fight for her. John told the woman that was on the jury to tell the truth. When she fell short he admitted to everyone that he had an affair and that Abigail was jealous and that she was lying by accusing his wife. Jon falls short because everything gets turned against him. He wife lies about what John Proctor said. When his wife tells him to confess he does it for her because he knows he has been a bad husband to her and he is hanged. The very last line of the play reads, “He have his goodness now god forbid I take it from him” (line 781). John’s wife even admits that he had goodness and she shall not take it from him anymore. She saw the change in him but it was too late because he was hanged. John Proctor is a good man that was selfish and changed by caring and speaking up to things. Unfortunately, he fell short and things turned against him. It’s like the universal saying,
