Title Have you ever been accused of something you didn 't do? It wouldn 't be a very comfortable position to be in. Well that 's what happens to John Proctor in Salem Massachusetts in the late 1600’s. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, A group of girls practice witchcraft in the woods and shortly after, two young girls, Ruth and Betty can 't wake up. The town then has an outburst of people with accusations on who practices witchcraft and the town of salem turns into chaos. Meanwhile, John Proctor is still trying to get over his affair with Abigail, a girl who was in the woods that day. Governor Danforth explains to John Proctor that once he confesses to his sins, his name will be posted on the church door for all of Salem to see and revealed to the public. Proctor does not like this arrangement and does not believe it is fair. John Proctor was very proud of what he accomplished in his life, the land he owned, and the family he established. He values his name and his life. He knows that if they post his name on the church door, it will ruin his reputation. John Proctor has never practiced witchcraft in his life and he knows in his heart that he is a good man. He is willing to do whatever he has to do in order to keep his reputation by giving in and confessing to something he never did if that 's what it takes. Finally, John Proctor comes to a conclusion. He decides he is not going to confess. He now tells Elizabeth that she needs to stay strong. John doesn 't want to let elizabeth or his family down and believes that the best way in doing so is to die. He wants to die a good and a pure man. He decides that the most important thing is keeping his family name pure, and not living a lie. In order to not live a complete lie, he must die for what he believes in. Even if that means leaving behind his family. He is a strong man if he is willing to do this. When John Proctor is about to confess of his sins and the court is questioning him, he will not speak a word about anyone other than himself. He will not say anything about Rebecca Nurse or any of the others. Danforth wants everyone that was accused to confess of their sins and name many others that were practising witchcraft also. John Proctor would hardly confess himself and will never say anything about any of his friends. John Proctor isn’t doing what the rest of the town has been doing. He is not accusing others. Instead he is keeping his mouth shut while focusing and thinking about other important things. John Proctor does not want his name to be hung on the church door and go public. He also doesn’t believe it is right for him to be the only one alive when his friends are getting hanged. This is the very moment when Proctor decides he must not confess. He would rather die a good man with all of his loyal friends beside him then survive and live with guilt. All of John Proctor 's friends are not going to confess or say anything to the court. John Proctor knows how wise and loyal his friends are and decides it is his turn to be wise and loyal back.
