At the beginning of The Crucible the reader finds out that John Proctor and Abigail have had an affair. John Proctor also finds out the truth about what happened out in the woods when Reverend Parris saw the girls dancing. The reader might end up questioning why John Proctor did not share that information with anyone. John Proctor is the type of character can either be related to or can be looked down upon in the beginning of the play but at the end of the ply he is a different person. John Proctor’s heart changed because he felt bad for what he did to his wife, Elizabeth. He realized that there was no need for him to have an affair with Abigail when he was not even taking the time to notice his own wife. Proctor notices this in the middle of the play and tries to do everything in his power to make it right again. Another part that relates to the affair with Abigail, is that while John is telling his commandments to Reverend hale, “ thou shall not….” He forgets one commandment and that is the one, which he disobeyed. John’s change of heart is seen a few moments after he tells his amendments to Reverend Hale when the guards show up to take Elizabeth. When the guards arrive they tell John and Elizabeth that Elizabeth has been charged for witchcraft. John tells Elizabeth that he will bring her home soon and that there is no need to worry. Before they took Elizabeth John asked who charged his wife and the guard told him that Abigail Williams had charged her. After finding out this information there is nothing going to stop John from telling the truth to the court about everything that is happening and how it
