Keep friends close, but keep enemies closer. That is a saying that many people know and have heard, but in the play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, they did not keep their enemies closer they got rid of their enemies. In the play many girls were dancing in the woods, and get caught by Reverend Paris. They knew what they were doing was a sin so the main leader of the girls, Abigail Williams, concocted a plan to make it look like they were under the hand of the devil, and they wanted to be saved. The town burst out into a panic, and people begin to start calling witchcraft on others, because of greediness. The girls destroyed many lives, and many people look back at those times in disgust. John Proctor and Abigail Williams are one of the most prominent symbols of revenge through the Crucible. It is brought to the reader in the first act that John Proctor and Abby have a past. At first their past is unknown to the reader, but throughout the act it is brought into the light that John had committed lechery with Abby. Abby was the Proctors servant girl, and worked for their family. Goody Nurse is a prominent role model in the town of Salem; she is a good wife, Christian, midwife, and so much more. The town of Salem adores Goody Nurse, except for the Putnam family. Goody Nurse does not show her dislike for their family, but you can infer they are not one of her favorite families, but once witchcraft has been taken over the town Goody Nurse finds herself in a difficult position. Goody Putnam has called “ For marvelous and supernatural murder of Goody Putnams babies” (Miller 1280). Goody Putnam had many children, but they had all died except for one, Ruth. Goody Nurse was a midwife in the town and assisted in the birth of Goody Putnams babies, but like the reader knows they had all died soon after the birth. This is another strong example of how the unresolved conflict and hate between the Putnams and Rebecca Nurse led to tragic results, which were Goody Nurse being sent to jail. The town was all in a rage after they had found out about the arrest of Rebecca Nurse. Many people were speaking of how such an amazing women she was and wondering, “How may such a woman murderer children?” (Miller 1280). The judges of the court knew that if Goody Nurse was put to death the town would have lost all faith in god, and they would breakout into terror. How could such
