One example of this is when she was being questioned at the very beginning of the play. She was asked if she was conjuring spirits in the woods with all of the other girls and Tituba. She lied and said that she did not do it. This leads to every single girl being questioned and accused. Almost all of the accused were being hanged until the executioners stopped after the lucky number 19. Things were getting out of control and the executioners were questioning why they were hanging people in the first place. When she was questioned about her shenanigans in the woods with the other girls, she said, “We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty got frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it.” (pg. 138, Act 1, line 69.) She lied and got away with it and it is not fair that other good, very innocent people died. She does not get charged and punished for any of these
