Theme Of Punishment In The Crucible

Having had grown up in a household with two sisters each being being two years apart i know what it is like to lie in order to avoid being punished. Growing up my sisters and I would always blame each other to prevent punishment. My mom would eventually grow tired of trying to figure out which of us three actually did it and either be left off the hook or be punished equally. When my sisters would get in trouble for something i did i would feel guilty and was obliged to try and make it up to them by letting them use one of my toys or confessing to my mom. The Crucible is a suspenseful, filled with evil, and naive characters play written by Arthur Miller. In order to try and preserve their life characters lie in order to escape punishment. When Abigail is being questioned about doing witchcraft she says Tituba the slave from Barbados “sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer”(187) and “she makes me drink blood”(187). Abigail is blaming her mistakes on Tituba in hopes of avoiding punishment alike people now in days who are willing to do all it takes to get what they want even if it means risking others’ life. After being blamed by Abigail, Tituba is obliged to lie about seeing the devil. The Barbados slave is terrified of possible being hang therefore confesses “no, no, don 't hang Tituba! I tell him i don 't desire to work for him sir”(188). Tituba is referring to the devil when she says him and is lying about having relations with him to stop from wanting to hand and beat her. The timid, innocent, and subservient Marry Warren is afraid is afraid since the moment she steps foot into the court. Danforth states “ Mary Warren has been conquered by Satan, who sends her here to distract your sacred purpose. If so, her neck will break for it” (217). Marry Warren is as good as gold and the servant of John and Elizabeth following Abigail 's removal and wants to remain loyal to them but also fears going against Abigail since she has been threatened to not say a word. Characters are willing to do all it takes, blame each other, and lie in order to return to their normal lives and forget about the supposed witchcraft happening. In hopes of returning the town to its traditional way the judges question everyone and everything to find whoever is responsible. Alike. my sisters and I when we were younger the characters would rather blame others than facing consequences. The fear of the unnatural drove the people of Salem to commit selfish acts which eventually lead to the end of
