The Crucible, a drama by Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. A group of girls are taken to trial for witchcraft when they are seen dancing around a fire by the church leader. A man, John Proctor, realizes that the entire story is fake and doesn’t believe the girls. Through a previous affair with the leader of the girls, Abigail Williams, Proctor learns that there was no witchcraft present. He is opposed by the Puritan leaders and put on trial himself, resulting in his death. Pride and integrity are shown in the crucible when John Proctor tells his wife that he had an affair with Abigail. They go hand in hand. When Proctor confesses to his wife about his affair. He shows pride by admitting his fault, and integrity by owning up to his mistake and apologizing. Reverend Hale feels guilty at the end of the play because he feels that he caused the trial and could have prevented it. This ties in with how John Proctor has to make a decision at the end: to tell the truth and die, or lie and survive. If Hale decides to convince the church that the girls are innocent, then there would have been no executions and no reason to kill more people at the end to justify the first 9 deaths. Pride and integrity are very similar, and examples from each can be applied to the other. Integrity and pride are very clear in The Crucible, because it teaches us that a good name and telling the truth is necessary at times. For example, it is shown when Proctor admits to his affair with Abigail to his wife. Integrity is present in the play, as well as pride. These points show us that it is important to always be honest and true to who you are. Be proud of what you believe in, even if it means sacrificing your life for your
