Many People will do crazy things to preserve their reputation. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller Strange, things happen in Salem during 1692, and innocent people got hurt because of it. The main conflict is Abby because she makes up ridiculous lies about who did it when she was the one doing witch craft in Salem and innocent people died because of it such as: Giles, Proctor, and Rebecca. Abby, Proctor, and Parris are the main characters in The Crucible. Parris, Proctor, and Abby portray the theme that people will go through extreme measures to preserve their reputation. Firstly, Abby is one of the characters who portrays the theme that people will go through extreme measures to preserve the reputation. To start, Abby portrays the theme when she says, "Why I am sure it is sir. There be no blush about my name!"(Miller 1.129-130.140). Abby in this scene is talking to her uncle because her uncle saw her in the woods doing witchcraft like things, and he fears it will come back on him. Abby, Tituba, Mercy, and Mary were the ones in the forest and Mercy were dancing naked in the forest and that they were drinking chicken blood, which is a sign of witchcraft. She says they were just having fun in the forest and that they were not doing witchcraft at all. This quote portrays the theme because she risks her life to preserve her name by trying to say there is nothing wrong with my name and she lies about not being in forest.
