The American Dream is freedom, happiness, and equal rights. In The Crucible Act 4 John Proctor is asked to lie on his friends to everyone to save himself. John tells Judge Danforth “... it is my name!... I have given my soul; leave me my name” to show how both equal rights and freedom was taken from John Proctor the same was it was taken from Arthur Miller. Both Miller and Proctor was blackmailed by someone. John was told if he lied to everyone and lied on his friends his conviction and accusation of being accused of witchcraft could just go away. Miller was told by a judge if he could set him up with a picture with Marilyn Monroe, his ex-wife, his conviction and accusation of being an Anti-American would just go away. Miller entered this quote/section into the play to show us how he lost his freedom to have a fair and speedy trial as everyone else in America. Also Miller was trying to tell how he didn’t have the same equal rights to defend himself and to stand up for himself as other Americans.
