For example, John Proctor allows himself to be locked up in his own thoughts to avoid the problems that may occur when regarding his affair with Abigail Williams. Within the first few lines of the script, Abigail admits that she still has feelings towards John. When he heard this, John replies with rather an unforgiving backlash. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut my hand before I will ever reach for you again.
