The first scene of act three of The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins with the courthouse questioning an accused Martha Corey of witchcraft. In attempts to save his wife from imprisonment, Giles Corey claims that accusing Martha of witchcraft was just one way Thomas Putnam was getting back at them for personal resentment concerning land disputes. With that, he is escorted out of the courtroom. Desperate to prove his wife’s innocence, Giles tries to convince Judge Hathorne, Deputy Governor Danforth, Ezekiel Cheever, and Parris by saying how they have six hundred acres of land to tend to, as well as the court is holding his wife by mistake. He goes as far as to say that Hale, who came to Salem to investigate further, never once accused her of…

In all of acts, Chapter 5 really stood out to me because it shows that God can use the worst situations for good purposes. The first part of this chapter talks about Ananias and Saphirra. When you sell a piece of property, you’re supposed to give ALL the money to the apostles, so that they could use it to benefit God’s kingdom. Instead, Ananias kept part of the money for himself. This shows that he had a lack of faith that God would provide for his needs.…

Scene one: Williams is standing before the court, mentally gathering himself before he is asked to present his defense. Confidence is definitely present: Williams knows that he is in the right. he Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a crucible as, “a vessel of a very refractory material used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat.” Other interpretations of the word mean, “a severe test,” and “a place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development.” The Crucible by Arthur Miller and today’s society are very much like the inside of a crucible because they have social pressures, private pressures, and pressure from fear. Everyone is changed by being inside a crucible one way or another.…

“When Miller was summoned before Senator McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee, he, contrary to Kazan, did not name any names. His experience led him to write his play about the Salem witch trials, … He considers that the play is still of alarming relevance, speaking directly about religious fanaticism… What happened in Salem in 1692 should be seen in the context of the puritan dream of recovering a lost paradise, even if in an austere and vain way. The devil appears precisely in this perfectionist desire to cleanse society…”. In a blog published on 17 March 2015 José de Segovia explains to us how Miller's experience and how being blacklisted by the HUAC led to him writing the famous play, The Crucible.…

So finally Miller chose to omit the fact that Proctor had a son who was also tortured during the witch trials because he refuses to confess to witchcraft. Although no one can know for certain what the actual individuals thought, felt or believed.…

Nicholas Hytner may have chosen to open the film with the scene of Tituba and the girls dancing in the forest to provide context for the coming events in the story. By showing this scene, the audience can infer that Betty decides to fake her illness in order to evade punishment from her father, Reverend Parris, who walks in on the girls’ nighttime activity in the forest. This opening scene also provides a clue about Abigail’s infatuation with John Proctor, since the other girls in the scene make requests concerning boys to Tituba, and also say to her, “Get her [Abigail] John Proctor, Tituba!”. Additionally, the inclusion of this scene in the movie provides a visual for proof of later references, such as when whether Parris saw someone naked…
