The Preface of N.T. Wright's book, The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is, explains what Wright's intent and purposes were for writing this book. Wright's purposes for writing this book was to show who the real Jesus was, what his teachings meant and how they can be applied to the modern society. Wright presumes that Christians go Sunday to Sunday repeating scripture and repeating the same things over and over, not fully analyzing what the text is saying. Jesus Seminar Paragraph Marcus J. Borg attests in his book Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time that Jesus comprises two distinct personas; “the pre-Easter Jesus” and “the post-Easter Jesus” (20). He further implies that it is necessary for us to be able to differentiate between these identities, and cites and commends “the work of a group of scholars known as the Jesus Seminar” in dutifully analyzing and clarifying these necessary distinctions (21). The conflict between the Christians and the Jesus Seminar has been an ongoing struggle since 1985. The Jesus Seminar, founded by Robert Funk, originated in 1985 as around 70 biblical scholars set out to determine the legitimacy of Jesus’ sayings (Dart). The Seminar focused on the historicity of Jesus using the best methods of science and literary criticism as it pertains to the Bible. Some books try to give new approaches and ways to disciple while others focus on what it means to be a disciple. The Boondocks has always been one of my favorite cartoons on television; a new episode was released called “A Huey Freeman Christmas”. The main character Huey is offered the opportunity to direct the schools Christmas play, however he decides to protest Jeus as an African American. The administration, who insists that Jesus should not be black; was protested by Huey. Eventually, they grant him permission to do so; he then titles the play “The Adventures of Black Jesus”.
