Good Morning Year 11, Ms Walsh and Ms Sotirios.
This morning I will be discussing the SBS documentary The Cronulla Riots. This documentary is an informative and educative text that provides responders with an insight into Australia's social and cultural context. The SBS documentary adverts to this circumstance through the use of facts and statistics. The responders are able to engage with the documentary, confronted with archival images of a break out amongst the two clashing cultures. Overall, the media plays a vital role in this event and documentary, sparking violence and tragedy.
Racism
Racism is defined as “many forms that can happen in many places. It includes prejudice, discrimination or hatred directed at someone because of their colour, ethnicity or national origin”. The Cronulla Riots was Australia's most shameful display of racism, as it made headlines around the world, Cronulla became a blaring call for racists around the country to unite.
This is evidenced in the quotes stated by Kevin Dunn, “The riots were racially motivated”, “There were racist texts that were being transmitted all around Sydney”, “Racist language used by the media”, which highlight unquestionably that racism was involved. The SBS website provides many interactive videos of how the racism which caused the riots was sparked, this source of information can be reliably found in Kevin Dunn
