So, the most important key issues discussed in his book “Let’s Get Free” is: mass incarceration, criminalization of drug offenders, and jury duty.
The first issue Butler arguing is about mass incarceration. Because today, the United States has the worse rate of incarceration in the world; which is the largest rate of 2.3 million people in the prison.(pg.25) And every year more people go to jail and the crime rate is increased. He says that people who are locked up does not prevent crime, and does not make society safer; it makes more unsafe. For example, “When crime goes up, we lock up more people. First of all, we must give the education to ours children; help ours communities to understand the system. Second thing, “make punishment fit the crime” and it would help to get the lower rate of mass incarceration. We must lock up the criminals who really dangers to ours society. But those who did bad choice in their lives, a specially with drugs use must have the chance to be rehabilitate and be back to the society, and live normal life. Also, Butler provides effective developed electronic device -the drug-detecting “E-Nose”. This technology works as a drug-sniffing dog and by using this electronic device police can reduce racial disparities.(pg.156-157) And the last thing is use the jury nullification. He sees that is very effective opportunity to citizens because this opportunity tells to the prosecutor and to the federal government that they are not agreeing with defendant charged. And the jury duty have a constitutional right to disagree the punishment, especially this can ideally work for non-violet drug
