The Crimean War broke out in October 1853. The results and aftermath of the war changed the shape of the European map forever. However, there are varying accounts on what really caused this war to break out in the first place. Whether it was because Russia wanted to expand and the Western Powers defended themselves or an act of hostility by the Europeans towards the Russians. The Crimean War broke out in October of the year 1853. Russia fought against France, England and the Ottoman Empire. The war started in the Balkans and was fought all throughout the Crimea. For three years the war went back and forth but with more countries joining France, England and the Ottoman Empire the Russians asked for peace. The war was full of technological …show more content…
The Russians started to buy up land all across Jerusalem in order to build their own facilities, accommodation and converted Catholic churches in Jerusalem to Russian orthodox ones. Furthermore, Figes also uses fights and massacres between Russians, Catholics and Muslim as proof of the growing tension in Jerusalem between the different religions. I feel that while he uses quality sources as proof for his idea I am not sure that I agree with the idea that it was only a religious war. Rather I feel that this might have been one small factor in what really caused the Crimean War. My second source and my historiography A Century of the Historiography of the Origins of the Crimean War was written by Brison D. Gooch, who is considered an authority on the Crimean War. He was a history professor at several universities throughout the United States including Institute of Technology and the University of Wisconsin. He fought in Germany and Belgium in the Second World War and observed the Nuremburg trials that took place after the war. Prince Mentschikoff threatened the Ottoman Empire and as a result the Czar of Russia was forced to back up his prince our else he would look weak. He also believes that the Czar Nicholas backed his prince because he already disliked Napoleon the Third and the war would give him a pretense to start a war with Napoleon using the Ottoman Empire. According to Rambaud, Czar Nicholas purposely sent Prince Mentschikoff when he did because both the French and English embassies didn’t have chiefs in Constantinople. The threat, which may or may not have been authorized by Czar Nicholas, was also accompanied by Russian troop deployments to the Russian- Ottoman boarder. Rambaud also states that the war had nothing to do with Russia making an attempt to grab the holy land for themselves. Then Czar Nicholas made a major miscalculation, not only was he abandoned by his allies Austria and Prussia, the French and English had both come to the aid of the Ottoman Empire. However while peace was almost brokered by the French and English the Ottoman Empire sabotaged the negotiations because of their hurt pride according to
