Crime has always existed, even long ago during biblical times crimes was evident. Several factors made it more visual in our society. In the early 1900’s the Uniform Crime Report became the most common way of tracking crime. The media has also brought crime and its high rates to the forefront. There is never a news broadcast be it local or national news that does not report on at least one account of crime. The rates at which crime takes place has changed over the last 100 or so years, along with the changing rate is a change in type of crime and also the characteristics of the offender. The United States is not alone in its battle with high crime rates as most other nations fight with crime problems, but the United States unfortunately leads the pack in high amounts of crime. The Uniform Crime Report was developed in 1930 with the purpose of gathering crime statistics from police departments all over the country and creating a central database (Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, 2009). The first year of data available is 1960. The number of violent crimes per 100,000 people in 1960 was 160.9, in a year where the population of the United States was 179,323,175 (Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, 2010). This meant that there were about 288,000 violent crimes. For 2012, the Uniform Crime Reports shows that in the United States the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people is 386, in a year where they population was 313,914,040 (Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, 2010).…
