The poets of the following poems all attempted to convey the message to the reader that like a wave, winter can mean something else depending on one's point of view. In the poem “The Cremation of Sam Mcgee” by Robert Service, to help the reader visualize how cold the Yukon winter is, Service used the hyperbole “[Sam] [is] chilled clean through to the bone” (line 22). s nearly impossible for someone to be chilled through to the bone; there are many layers of fat, skin, blood, muscle, etc. Service felt that the reader would feel like they were in the story more if he used the hyperbole, because many people can relate. Most people have has their teeth start to chatter, goosebumps cover your arms, spine starts to tingle. In the poem “Washed in Silver” by James Stephens, the author uses the metaphor and imagery in order to help the reader understand the fact that like a wave, winter can generate different emotions from one's point of view. In the verse “Gleaming in silver are the hills” Stephen used imagery and metaphor to help the reader think of winter as something full of life, not deadly, beautiful, not ghastly, tranquil, not chaotic. (line 1) In the poem “Winter” by Nikki Giovanni, the poet attempts to help the reader understand that humans and animals both need to prepare for winter, but in different ways. Giovanni uses the metaphor “Bears store fat, Chipmunks gather nuts, and [she] gather[s] books” to help the reader understand that humans and animals prepare for winter, but differently (lines 9-11). Some people could relate to the ways that the poet prepares for winter (in. Buying books) which could help them better understand the poems main idea.
