The Credibility Of Evidence In Research

Improved Essays
Evidence has been used to prove the reliability and credibility of a variety of claims for thousands of years. It has been used in the scientific world to come up with theories to understand the way the world works, it is still used now in the legal system, and was even used to prove whether or not a person was a witch (Noll, 2018). The credibility of evidence, however, is much harder to establish than it is to produce eyewitness evidence. The authors from the texts assigned for the class have each produced their own view on evidence. In order to better understand the author’s approaches to evidence, there must be an established universal definition of evidence that each approach draws from. The dictionary definition of evidence is: “something that furnishes proof” (Evidence, 2011). In the case of the paranormal, there is an abundance of evidence, however, in most cases this evidence is often easily debunked or is subjective to one person’s experiences. …show more content…
Often repeated in lecture, Sagan says: “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence [however,] extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” (Noll, 2018). The paranormal lends itself to having wild claims—witches, talking to dead people, possessions, ectoplasm coming out of people’s bodies—but there is often very little objective proof to support these claims. Sagan’s baloney detection kit (Sagan, 2013) discredits many of the claims made. The authority over these claims are the people claiming that they have these extraordinary experiences and hold a bias that they want to convince their audience of the same. Therefore, eyewitness testimony being examined through Sagan’s detection kit would not hold up because people don’t want to be told that their memories are wrong and become attached to the “I know what I saw”

Many people are confused about what paranormal actually means. To most, the term can be pictured with pale ghosts and walking zombies or aliens with their bright UFOs. A real definition, however, is explained as: "the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature. Parapsychology [the study of the paranormal phenomena] is a component of the broader study of consciousness and the mind" (Rhine 1). This explanation describes it as the study of supernatural and paranormal beings we are unable to see, hear, or use any other sense to locate these spirits.…

Writing Assignment One In his article, Your Sixth Sense, Matthew Hutson explains ways the brain tricks people into believing they are experiencing a paranormal event. Hutson first explains anomalous experiences and continues with how some events that appear supernatural are really just meaningful coincidences. Near-death and out-of-body experiences are explained next, then he touches the topic of contacting spirits; the article is wrapped up by explaining who is more likely to be susceptible to these experiences. Anomalous Experience Everyone has that feeling of being watched at times, and occasionally when they look to see who the culprit could be they find them, according to Hutson this is an anomalous experience.…

Evidence Interpretation Over the years, there have been several cases that have been resolved with a false guilty plea or cases where a guilty party was not convicted of a crime. There are various elements that play a role in solving cases; evidence is a one of these key elements. Many factors can determine if the evidence submitted before a court of law is accurate such as how the evidence is collected, if proper protocell was followed before the laboratory’s handling of the evidence, and if the evidences was accurately processed by the crime scene laboratory by various forensic scientists. Furthermore, with the advances in technology in today’s society, various pieces of evidence such a DNA analysis have been considered a crucial element…

This chapter from Paranormal America is dedicated to discussing what the paranormal is and how to define it. The authors begin the chapter by explaining the difficulty in naming the phenomenon of the paranormal. The list is seemingly endless and diverse, which includes the words such as: “supernatural,” “metaphysics,” “pseudoscience,” and “New Age” (Bader, Mencken, and Baker, pg. 20). The definitions of these words are not concrete and are often used interchangeably. People would make the argument that they are not the same, particularly the term “New Age.”…

Scientists will repeat experiments numerous times in highly controlled environments before they craft any basis for their claims. They try to go in with an unbiased mind set as much as possible and concern themselves with being open to the possibility that the answer to the question they have formulated could go in either direction of proof or disproof. Discipline and tediously repeated and controlled experimentation is lacking in the field of paranormal research. Many are in the field for the thrill and excitement of the hunt, so to…

There have also been people who have had spiritual experiences as groups and felt that was valid as evidence as well. For instance, in a city in Mexico, a group of individuals have a church in which diamonds have been shown to fall during their worship time. The evidence that God was real to them was that he had answered their financial necessities by provided them with a sky raining diamonds. This is physical evidence of something spiritual, diamonds that rain from the sky isn’t something that can be accomplished every time we wanted to convince others of Gods existence. The miracle itself continues to occur to this group and only to this group, yet we can see how this occurs if we were to visit.…

One piece of evidence that ghosts exist is that there have been many proven interactions with the dearly departed. In my case, my stand point belongs to a ghost story, were her fiancé is a supernatural being who is waiting for her return. My hypothesis is based on the supernatural due to the fact that a variety of supernatural events occurs throughout the story. Moreover, the story begins when Mrs. Kathleen Dover returns to her house. The first indication that proves my hypothesis to be true is that ¨no human eye watched Mrs. Dover´s return¨, meaning that something or someone supernatural was watching her and therefore no one else saw her.…
