As Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Books have the capability to be any person's escape from reality and no book should ever be subjected to the term "banned". Every book has at least one good thing to offer, no matter how great or small. All the reader has to do is give the book a chance and find that one thing. The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is one such book that should be taught in high school.…

The book is narrated by the protagonist and it details his life up until the day he finishes writing his memories. The beginning details his childhood in Afghanistan with his best friend, and servant, up until his twelfth summer, the summer of 1975, for which he never truly forgave himself for. If you, like me, have read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, you can hopefully agree when I say that it changed my life. And while the story has a great impact, it doesn’t mean the book itself is all fun and games. The book, however “edgy”, is frankly, relatable for teenagers.…
