He steps off of the airplane and onto the land of another country. He looks around at the tall high rises of the city that surround him in a midst of confusion. There are other people there too, but he doesn’t speak or interact with any of them. He has come alone. At first he isn’t sure where he needs to go or what he needs to do, because he does not speak any English. Everyone encircling him does. After a twenty-hour flight, the airplane has taken him to Columbus, Ohio, the very first city in the United States that he has encountered. This is the beginning for him. The time in his life where he takes one step on this land and each step after that takes him somewhere bigger and better.
That was two years ago, but Fowzi Sharaiha, now twenty-five, remembers that day clearly. He remembers how it felt and what he saw. He remembers the confusion swirled inside of him mixed with happiness and fear all at once. “Mixed feelings,” he said. Most of all, he remembers what he

Fowzi’s family intends on moving here in the future, but their move is still being processed. Even when he was only eighteen years old, Fowzi knew this is what he wanted, but it wasn’t until he travelled to Germany when “it opened up [his] mind to the opportunity.” Studying there for a month in college, Fowzi realized that so much potential was waiting for him somewhere else. He just had to wait and hope for another whole year, the time it would take for his immigration process to finally be completed.
