There was a moment where she was relieved. Relieved that she didn’t upset him enough to make him leave. The moment passed quickly when she looked at the clock. Midnight. “Shit!”
“What? What’s wrong? What did it say?” Jake moved over to her couch and sat beside her.
She handed him the letter to read. He quickly scanned the words, then frowned.
“Are you in love with him Bennett?”
“Yes. I am.”
He smiled a sad smile then, knowing he couldn’t have her as anything more than a friend.
“I’m sorry Jake.”
“Don’t be sorry. Maybe you should give him a call, let him know what happened, that we just found the note? Bennett I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and you him. Don’t give up on that.”
She picked up her cell phone off the coffee table and dialed

Give me a chance to explain.” Vance fought the words out roughly through the hand wrapped around his throat.
“No, I couldn’t. Not after I already found out the truth. I gave you a dozen chances to tell me what was going on. I asked you where you were all those weekends, I begged and pleaded with you to tell me the truth. You lied every time. The only thing worse than a cheater… is a liar.”
His watery eyes locked on hers. Then he looked to Jake. “Please let me talk to her, just talk.” He croaked the words out.
Jake looked to Bennett. She sighed and nodded.
Jake released his throat, but continued to stand between the two.
Vance coughed several times as he rubbed his sore neck. “I didn’t want to lose you. That’s why I lied. I didn’t even want her. She was the money behind my production company. We had a thing, before I knew it sh was pregnant and insisted we get married. It was a mistake from the start. I was trying to figure out a way to leave her but still keep my company. If she would’ve found out about you I would’ve lost it all.”
“Well she didn’t. And she won’t now if you just leave me alone. For good this time Vance. Please.”
“I don’t know if I can do that.” He said.
The knock on the front door echoed through the house.

SStepping out of the carriage, both men stretched, hoping that particular action would alleviate their aching muscles, a direct result from their jarring ride, and said their goodnights, although almost daylight, to go their separate ways. Entering the manor, Nightburn hurried to the north wing library, opened the door, and went directly to the bookcase, easily finding the book and opening it to the page, read the passage aloud, “The power of Vilgoth is necessary. Destroy all those who would oppose Vilgoth’s will.” The bookcase opened as a result and he stepped into the passage leading to the portal below, making certain to close the panel behind and running down the stairs to step into the luminous central portal and out at the military…

It was late night yet it was difficult to sleep. Outside the wind roared through the trees in the front yard, making them creak and groan, like a ghost in the night. I could hear their agitated sway as if the branches were getting ready to snap off. My thoughts, however, troubled me more than the horror story soundtrack outside of my window. Roxanne slept on, undisturbed by all the noise.…

Turning around and focusing on the crowd, I slipped on my headphones again, and blocked out every single thought that tried to worm its way in my head. I practically lost myself as I really did give these ponies a time of their life: I cranked up the volume and bass, though not to distorted levels, and improvised a sick remix to go with the track that was playing; and it worked out to say the least. There wasn’t any thought of her at all, only doing what I do best: Being a DJ. Rocking the it all to smithereens, I gave one final, slow beat when the song ended, and, during it, dimmed the spotlights to make it completely dark, only to dim them back up again. That’s when everypony clapped and cheered, even whistling at me for the grand performance.…
