The Country Is Going Through A Rough Spell Summary

Spelling is very important, but it has seemed to disappear from modern day education across the United States. In the article “The Country is Going Through a Rough Spell” Bob Greene writes about the horrible decline in spelling he has seen over the last couple years. This article was written in 1981 and spelling has only gotten worse since then. Mr. Greene has a very different experience with spelling in the public world because he constantly receives letters from a lot of different people per day. In his article he writes, “It getting to the point where a letter with no misspelled words is the exception.” In order to get another person's opinion on this subject I interview my father, Christopher Mann.
Weekly word lists and spelling tests were once a part of growing up. My dad was eliminated in the first round of the school spelling bee, where everyone had to compete, over the word “orchestra.” For my fifth grade year our school did not even have a spelling bee. With this new generation of kids and technology spelling may be going out the window of most kinds school experiences. Schools are being forced to make a tough decision between giving up writing and all the skills that come with and teachings kids to use computers or to stay behind the technology advances and keep teaching spelling, grammar, and other

My dad solution is to take off points on papers for spelling and grammar mistakes. Homework do not need to be checked for spelling but important research papers where it takes more time and effort to write should be checked for spelling mistakes by not only the teacher but the student as well before it is turned in. This responsibility for spelling mistakes should start around sixth grade and maybe even earlier because of how easy computers make it to find and correct your
