The dominant group in this movie are the people like Walt. People who are not Asian and who have the same customs and speech that Walt does. These are the people that are less discriminated against and who are treated better. This group of dominant people are more likely to get help when needed and get a lesser punishment when arrested. The ones in the minority group of the movie are the people like Sue and Thao. They often speak in a different language which separates them from others and draws attention. They celebrate and partake in different customs that are unusual to those in the dominant group. People like Sue and Thao do not reach out to authorities in the movie when Sue is hurt because they feel they can’t and believe that the cops will not do anything to help. Walt does not really know his neighbors at the beginning of the movie, but forms assumptions and opinions about them based on their race and ethnicity. Throughout the movie Walt makes many racist comments regarding Asians. He calls them names such as, barbarians and fish heads. Walt even jokes about them eating dog during a cook out at Thao’s house. In one scene in the movie Walt is at the barbers where he and a other older white man joke …show more content…
He does not take the time to get to know them personally because of his racism, which only intensifies after Thao tries to take his car. When Thao is forced to help Walt as punishment, Walt considers it an inconvenience and makes his dislike of Thao clear. After Walt spends time with Thao and begins to learn more about him, he grudgingly starts to like him. Even though Walt can be quite gruff and irritable towards them, Thao’s family accepts Walt into their home and shows concern over his wellbeing. In the end Walt is able to look past their race and ethnicity, and gives his life to insure Sue and Thao’s safety and
