In the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, the count claims that his revenge is justified by God, but that does not necessarily mean that it really is. The sins he commits to get back at the ones who are so called responsible for his mistreatment and suffering in the Chateau D’If are not truly justified with God. The protagonist, Edmond Dantes, used this as his motivation along with that God was on his side through it all, but is he really? “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge;I will repay,” says the Lord” (New International Version, Romans 12:19) Should revenge lie with God or man?
While in the Chateau D’If, Edmond meets Abbe Faria when he accidentally digs into Edmonds cell. Abbe becomes a father figure to Edmond by helping him find the ones responsible for his imprisonment. God should be the one avenging ‘people for the evils that they have done. So was Edmonds motivation right? Did he do everything for nothing? Could he just sit back and let God do everything. “They feel that if you seek revenge in the pursuit of justice you want to avenge wrongs: not revenge them.” (Avenge/Reveange).
