Mars Exploration: The Cost Of Human Space Exploration

Improved Essays
As technology advances, we see space exploration continue to grow further and further. Many attempts to send rovers to Mars have gave scientists greater knowledge about the planet and a consideration of sending people there to colonize the planet in the near future. On April 15, 2010 President Obama stated by the 2030s we should have enough information to send people to the orbit of Mars and bring be able to bring them home safely. “ I think of NASA is going to continue in the business of human spaceflight, then it definitely needs a destination” (Greg Klerkx). The support for the Mars One project is huge and has to overcome three problems to make the plan a success. The cost, the value it gives scientists, and the danger are the problems …show more content…
The cost of the Mars One is around 4 billion US dollars to send 4 people with minimal equipment and food (“The History of Mars Exploration”). The extensive cost to get more equipment and extra food to try and extend the mission to gather more information about the planet is estimated around 6 billion US dollars (“The History of Mars Exploration”). Experiments in Hawaii are held to train people for this mission and to find the four candidates for the mission. This experiment puts people through simulation tests to see if they can handle the stress. These tests include living with minimal food, allowing very little water to use for consuming and showering, leaving them with a lack of communication, and physical tests such as gravity tests. When Mars One is launched the plan is to continue to send four more people every 2-3 years ("LIVE FROM MARS”). This is because it allows for fresh information and more help on the planet. These people will have to live in a 1000 square foot dome until more supplies can be sent to begin the colonization ("LIVE FROM …show more content…
There are multiple factors that lead to the project going wrong but that is why NASA is taking every precaution necessary to make sure they have the best members going and know what to do to carry out their role. A quote from a former president said "We choose to go to the Moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard” (John F. Kennedy). The quote from John F. Kennedy carries over to the Mars One mission. If it was easy to get to Mars then everyone would do it. NASA knows the mission is dangerous and continues to advance in their technology to keep their astronauts

While the idea of living on Mars is exciting, it’s not necessarily ideal. Lisa Grossman’s article “SpaceX Mars Plan is Clever but Unconvincing” presents a stronger argument than Eric Betz’s article “The Falcon has Landed. Now SpaceX is Eyeing Mars” because overall, Grossman’s has more authority, is more logical, and uses better examples. 2 One of the main reasons Lisa Grossman’s argument is stronger is because overall, she has more credibility than Eric Betz. Although Betz is associate editor of Discover magazine and has written numerous articles on space and nature, Gossman has had years of experience in astronomy.…

The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) is another base providing a suitable habitat for simulations and research (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation). The geography at this isolated location in Hawaii is exceptionally similar to that on Mars. Additionally, synonymous with conditions on Mars, the area is largely clear of plants and animals (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation). The soil near this Hawaiian base contains minerals also found in Martian soil (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation). Moreover, many geographic features such as lava tubes and channels would be available for the crew to explore (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation).…

One last reason why people shouldn’t go to Mars is because there are so many risks of Death in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and common casualties such as sickness or even as simple as a suit ripping. These can also be fatal because the pressure is so different there that anyone would die in seconds if something went wrong and their body met the outside air. The temperature also gets as low as 150°C which would cause death by freezing but a human would die by the pressure way before freezing. Let alone all of these horrible casualties, there would also be extreme boredom because all day people would do chores, go to the bathroom, and then conduct research. These are only a few of the many reasons of why not to waste time going to…

Many people have dreamed of traveling to another planet. Since the technology is there, the clock is ticking for the day the announcement is made that a spaceship is making its way to Mars. Most people do not think about what will happen once there are people on Mars, however, and what they will do then. Survival and living a sufficient life away from the civilization on Earth are common things one might think of. “The Coming Schism” by James E. and Alcestis R. Oberg explores what will happen when people finally colonize Mars.…

Mars colonization means that we should send some normal people (enough for reproduction, at least 100 people), land on Mars and live in Mars. This is a similar process with what we have done in America. Our journey to Mars is truly difficult. Until now, we have or had 12 spacecraft orbit and 12 spacecraft land on Mars, but half of our mission failed on the journey to Mars (data from NASA). However, we are still incessant trying to get the gate of the Mars.…
