College is something all junior-senior high school students look forward to. The last two years of high school are critical to students planning on applying and going to college. Scoring high enough on the ACT or SAT, having good grades, participation in extra-curricular activities, volunteer hours, and so much more. The reality in society is that most middle class families can’t afford college tuition because of its expensive cost. The cost of student loans is outrageous as well because at the end, a student could end up with a hundred thousand dollars in debt only for interest. Due to this there is a trillion dollar debt in the United States which is astonishing. Not only is tuition paying administration and faculty, but it is also covering the cost of every unnecessary luxury on campus. In this documentary, most topics dealing with money are discussed, for example the fact that college tuition is so expensive, student loans, debts, increase in tuition, and if college is worth the cost. It focuses on Cooper Union and their situation on the neglect of their mission statement by the president of the university in which is charging tuition for the first time ever. And also how colleges are spending more money on parties and luxurious materials than on educational materials such as tutors, books, and etc. Ivory Tower also views different types of colleges like, Deep Springs College which is a free college that teaches through three pillars, HBCUs like Spellman College, and online courses such as MOOCs and Udacity. As well as different opportunities like UnCollege in which the Theil scholarship pays a student to drop out of college and start a business.
