The Cost Of Space Exploration

Improved Essays
Space Exploration is the imagination of many coming to life. It is exploring our many surroundings and increasing our knowledge of the universe. Its helps us better understand how our universe works, which in turn helps us better understand earth! Why do we spend so much money on finding out what is surrounding us, when earth isn’t safe nor completely explored. This is what I don’t understand. In source A, David Livingston states that “the manned space exploration is absolutely worth the cost.” I do not entirely disagree with this statement, but when Livingston says “how to be a better steward of precious earth” that is when it aggravates me. As human beings of Earth, we have not explored the majority of our oceans. To this date, we have only explored 5% of the ocean, 5%! There is 95% that has never been seen …show more content…
The first thing that should stand out to a reader would be the veterans benefit and services. They get nothing compared to social security which gets 21% of every dollar while veterans benefits only gets 3%. You might be saying to yourself as you read this “wouldn’t social security help veterans also?” You are right but people in the military get paid crap for what they do and without them we wouldn’t have a country in the first place. According to source E there was almost $17 billion sent to NASA. So why are we spending so much money on space exploration instead of supporting those who have sacrificed to make our country what it is today? As a grandson of a veteran I am ashamed of our country. No matter what the surrounding is it could have a major impact on how someone functions. Figuring out this surround could help that someone better understand how things work and make their life easier. This is why everyone is so set on space exploration. I do not disagree that space exploration in needed and is a good thing, I believe that this country has the wrong priorities

Therefore, these issues, out of many, are ones that should be considered most relevant. Many people believe that accomplishments are not reached in space, so why should the government waste money on it? However, I believe there is not enough financial aid given to the space related companies for them to prove themselves, even if they have landed on the moon, six times. In a chart from a 2006 estimate on how each federal dollar is spent, space and technology is stuck with an "All Others" category with only six pennies out of each federal dollar to work with. These six pennies are also shared with many other items, like general government.…

Easter island destiny From explorers sailing to America to manifest destiny, humans have always been eager to travel to new places and expand to push the boundaries that accepted by most and challenged by few. Now that we are jaded of what seems to be everything on earth, we thirst for a spring of unknown knowledge. That exploring space, with the inkling that it is the next step to improving life on earth, will successfully quench. However, us dismissing our home as being fully explored is rash. It is not ethical for us to try to travel to deep space when we have many unexplored territories and problems, corresponding with them, right here on earth.…

Many people argue that this is a waste of money. If we stop sending human beings into space, this money can be used for other useful research in the science field including the depths of the ocean, which is close to 90 percent unexplored (Etzioni). The United States alone has a space program budget of over seventeen and half billion dollars just for the year 2015 (Rogers). In great regards many people question why we spend that annually, and even more so why does the amount keep increasing? Which poses the question: What makes this field of research cost so much?…

For example, David Livingston argues that although space exploration costs an exorbitant amount of money, much of it goes right back into the paychecks of those involved, funding “manufacturing, research and development, salaries, benefits, insurance companies, doctors, teachers, scientists, students blue- and white-collar workers, and corporations and businesses both large and small” (Source A). Space exploration functions as an umbrella term that encompasses hundreds of smaller faculties, each of which strengthening from overarching investment and improving the international economy. However, some, like Professor Russell Roberts, continue to argue that it should be a private business venture. He digresses the unimaginable romantic appeal of exploration, but states that regardless of “spin-off technologies,” the money should be left on Earth (Source H). Though this perspective reflects a healthy dose of realism, it fails to buy into the revolutionary potential of space exploration.…

Most naysayers of manned space travel focus heavily on the danger to the astronauts and the massive amount of resources that are supposebly wasted in space. Some argue against government funded space programs while others argue against space travel in general, but all say they have good reason. Space travel is expensive, many people say that we could use this money to fix many of the world 's problems such as hunger and poverty. This is a very good rebuttal to space exploration as the problems with poverty are very important. Yet the amount of money that could potentially be made with space technology such as asteroid mining would help these problems far more than just redirecting current funds out of space.…
