The Cosby Show is a positive image of African American television show compared to other television shows representing negative image of racial discrimination an example, is The Jefferson’s. The viewer’s acknowledges that the show avoided racial issues and existence of stereotypical African American middle-class family on television. The Huxtable family show made it a reality that a person could be able to follow their American dream and that hard work does pay off. The Jefferson show was an African American couple living in New York City and a traditional sitcom. However, the show tackles a few controversial topics, including racism, suicide, gun control and adult illiteracy. “The show constantly used words like “nigger” and “honky”, especially during the earlier seasons.” George Jefferson character was referred to as an Archie Bunker in blackface; he was a person that was rude, stubborn and intolerant person. The Jefferson’s was one of three programs of the period to feature African Americans in leading roles; Louise Jefferson character was known as an old south Manny stereotype man. George Jefferson a millionaire businessman, his character was made fun of and he was referred to as a buffoon. Even Florence, his own maid had no respected for him some African American questioned, the show because it seemed that people were laughing at George Jefferson character, he continuously made a fool of himself on the show. He also referred white people as honkies but his wife Louise was always apologizing for her husband 's behavior. The cast members who played Tom and Helen Willis who were an interracial couple with two children the first television program to feature an interracial married couple and it offered an uncommon, comic, portrayal of a successful African American family. Cultural diversity is in our workplace and schools we may encounter stereotypes while communicating with others even though we have different opinions toward their cultures values and beliefs. We can learn from another culture but we have to respect their differences. I think in today society people are stereotype others based on their race and social class because we automatically judge another person without knowing them and assume they are a certain way. Everyone is different we identify ourselves with our own social beliefs, religious beliefs and racial traits and should not be judged because we are all different individuals. Furthermore, everyone has different views on how the media portrays racial issues on Television shows for example, The Cosby Show and The Jefferson’s how they are portrayal negative and positive image towards African American and minorities. The perceptions that we develop of ourselves, others, are representations through reality mass media images. Whether we want to admit it or not, we all rely on the media to help shape our opinions, attitudes and beliefs on a variety of social issues that interest or affect us every
