Blood Diamonds Corruption

Once diamonds were found in Sierra Leone, they were sought out in many other countries. This proved that a certain resource can be anywhere large or small, but the concept of how and why the diamond industry or any concept, such as cotton, will erupt and diffuse if profit is evident. Yet again raising the question of why are there so many more diamonds as a resource in Sierra Leone that any other country. Scientists have proved that diamonds come from the rock kimberlite, which is stored in the upper mantle, formed millions of years ago. Diamonds are compressed in extreme temperatures through cratons, and it is very hard to find cratons that are stable enough and have stayed intact to create said diamonds. Strides, such as the new passed law by Abdul Tejun Cole, are helping the issue get better with time. Even though this has helped, the main issue is that a government will become corrupt when weak, and then forced upon a cycle of reliability. As blood diamonds become more prominent and vital to the African government, the diamonds have increased the spread and level of political corruptions, as well as the concept of such trade. To solve this problem there are solutions that could improve the flow and reduce the trade of blood diamonds. The main official who has greatly helped the corruption of said resource is head of the Anti-corruption committee, Abdul Tejan Cole. He has just introduced a new system where each public official must state his assets before being appointed. Despite Cole’s efforts, there are many other ways that may be more effective than such law. The Kimberly process has been the catalyst of change regarding the trade by making sure the diamonds are conflict free, and have a known point of origin. Along with this, Sierra Leone needs to have a more structured government that enforces laws, in addition to where political leaders can be held accountable for things they have done, not promoting dictatorship. There should be press communication or the ability for everyone to know what is happening, so they can help stop it, not only to the world but everyone in Sierra Leone as well. Let the people have a say, because the government is ultimately weak when it’s corrupt, and it will remain corrupt until there is a strong change. There are definitely challenges to this solution regarding the reactions of the nation’s leaders, but this would be a strong mindset to address when moving forwards in the problem known as blood

Instead of passing power to the active government officials, Britain passed power to,” a clique of powerful families who set about plundering the country” (Marxist.com). The goal of these powerful families was to strip the country of its wealth and take complete control. This corrupt government left the country in it’s worst shape ever. Not until 1997 did the U.N. try to strip the government of its power but it was already too late, poverty struck, and nothing could stop it from ending. The wrath of the corrupt government is still being felt by Sierra Leone today, and that is what has ultimately left the country where it is at…

If every diamond that has ever been found had been sold on the open market, they would be less expensive than emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Financial greed is evident in the De Beers Group as it trumps any ethical problem that stands in the way of their profits. The De Beers Group 's financial plan is simply written as this, “ Over the course of the twentieth century, De Beers pursued a plan that was as simple as it was ruthless: Buy as much of the world production [of diamonds] as possible and tightly control global distribution through its London offices” (Campbell 108). The De Beers Group had a meticulous plan to control diamond distribution not only nationally but also globally. As a result of this, the De Beers Group could…

In this response, I will be talking about the argument of Christoffer Guldbrandsen in his documentary Stealing Africa. Christoffer Guldbrandsen’s intention of this film was to show the world of Zambia’s extinct copper mining tax return. He is informing us that Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, which owns Mopani Copper Mines, is cheating the government of Zambia and not supplying that country with the tax funds they rightfully deserve. Zambia is known to have the third largest copper reserve in the world, but somehow the citizens of Zambia live on less than one dollar a day and eighty percent of the people who live there are unemployed. Because of this Zambia is ranked among the twenty poorest countries worldwide.…

Corruption is bad for the economy as the discretionary issuance of mining permits allows for the practises of bribery and rent seeking to take place. This case study took place at a pivotal time for reform and debate in the sector, as parliamentary elections were approaching and mining sector issues were at the top of the agenda (Nunberg et al: 2012). The major concerns over the sector were in corruption and weak governance in the mining sector, particularly in the issuance of mining permits. This is of utmost importance as under regulation could lead to manipulation over the…
