McDunn drowns in the pits of loneliness. The reason I chose this quality (loneliness) is that at the beginning of the short story we encounter McDunn and Johnny (protagonist/narrator) working in a lighthouse tower that releases a cry like sound of a lonely animal that comes from the foghorn. All they do is sit and watch the sea. Some may find the sea relaxing, but I don’t think that’s the case when it comes to McDunn or Johnny (the protagonist). Where it shows McDunn’s loneliness; “It learned you cannot love anything too much in this world. It’s gone into the deepest deeps to wait another million years.” (Pg.256) the author hasn’t written what emotion came across his tone when he said what he did, but I figured that his tone must have sounded
