“The Corporation” documentary by Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott & Joel Bakan shows that businesses are dishonest to the people to continue earning more revenue while the people are getting sick. The film also shows how corporations cause health problems and environmental issues by using unethical methods to obtain additional profit. This documentary examines the history of the corporation and the role they play in society. The main point throughout the documentary is that competition is important. Monsanto is a corporation that produces artificial designs as well as synthetic hormones that are found in food and drinks. Monsanto is a pesticide manufacturer that produced somatotropin, which is a genetically modified chemical. Somatotropin is injected into cows, and as a result the cow produces more milk. This pesticide injected into the cow has horrible consequences for the cow because the cow could be in pain as a result. Injecting cows with harmful substances for the benefit of milk sellers is unethical to both the cow and to those who drink the milk. Farmers inject Posilac rBST into the cows that are healthy to produce more milk. Genetically modified food is not expensive, but it is cruel for our bodies. Genetically modified foods produced larger crops that grow faster. Furthermore, cows that are injected with artificial hormones have the possibility of getting “mastitis”, an infection in the cow’s udders. The infection can cause pain to the cow since the milk ducts are clogged and the udders become inflamed. When people drink this milk from infected cows, people are more likely to catch that infection themselves. When the cow has an infection, the company injects the cow with antibiotics to combat the infection, which can reduce or get rid of mastitis. This corporation produces artificial designs as well as synthetic hormones that are found in milk that we drink. They found out that the udders of the cows become swollen and infected and this is harmful to cows and the people. Jane and Steve tried to act and save the American people from Monsanto and harmful milk. When they told their boss what they needed to do, Fox News declined to listen to them due to the fear of getting sued, losing advertisements, and losing money. In addition, the employees refused to lie to the people on national news. They talked to Fox News lawyers after being fired and said that the human beliefs, values and health should be more important than making money. However, Jane filed paperwork to Federal Communications Commission in Florida to file a whistleblower claim against Fox News. Then the Monsanto corporation tried to settle with Jane only if she did not talk about Monsanto and their procedures, but she refused. At first, she was awarded her whistleblower status, but after Fox News appealed the decision she lost her whistleblower status and reward. The court determined that misrepresenting news is not a contradiction of the law. Jane and Steve were ethical people who tried to stop an unethical corporation by using their platform to attempt to tell the world.
