The expression of art in all of its visual forms is produced to be appreciated and invoke an emotional response towards the viewers that consume it. The Philbrook located here in Tulsa, Oklahoma features various works from the European Middle Ages that succeed in accomplishing such a feat. Particularly, The Coronation of the Virgin, an Italian painting by Andrea di Cione, dated back to circa 1375 left me enthralled when visiting the museum (1). The material is composed of egg tempera on a linden wood panel that showcases the beauty of the pigments, rather than distract from it, due to artists paint choice (2). Despite the decades that have passed since the conception of the painting, the colors are still striking, especially the gold tint that surrounds each subject. The young angels showcased at the bottom of the painting are playing instruments during the event; the harp and violin respectively. While the older, adult disciples have books and quills with ink still attached to tip close to their persons. The men also exclusively hold tight to swords, canes, and another even has a wooden cross resting on his shoulder. Each face has intricate features that express a multitude of reactions and expressions. There is a mixture of amazement, intrigue, and skepticism that is seemingly directed towards the sight above them.
