Holistic nursing is defined as all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal. The practice recognizes the whole person, the mind, emotion, spirit, social/cultural, relationship, context, and environment (unknown, nd). This type of nursing includes self-care, self-responsibility, spirituality and reflection, I believe self-care is the most important of these core values. Holistic nursing value themselves, they integrate self-awareness, self-care and self-healing into their lives (Dossey, 2013). Nurses when they incorporate self-care first use yoga, meditation, massage, good nutrition and energy into their everyday lives. I believe that nurse should practice what they teach. An antibiotic can be considered a cure. Allopathic medicine is what we use for cures, it is what is given for sign and systems of a disease. A cure is about trust and compliance, about taking the medication as prescribed and seeing the symptoms of the disease recede. Healing is the rebalance to wholeness, it is a drive, an instinct, an impulse (Michaela, 2011). Healing is faith, it is believing that your body can heal itself, it is a transformation.
I had a patient once in the hospital for her diabetes mellitus 11 being elevated, and while there she told me how she had quit smoking several years earlier. She stated that her daughter had just given birth to a beautiful baby boy and she would be taking care of the child, while the mom finished school. She had been a smoker for over thirty years, but wanted to quit so she could take care of this baby. She stated that she had quit several times before but it had never completely worked. The patient stated that she would always want to have another cigarette, but did not so she could care for this child. She stated that she would always have the addiction to cigarettes but believed she was healed from them at this time. It has been three years since she quit, she is eating a healthier diet, exercising, but her greatest joy remain is spending time with her three year old grandchild.
