The Cooping Theory In Edgar Allan Poe's Death

“The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead” (“Poe’s Life”). Poe moved around a lot during his life and ended up meeting up with his childhood sweetheart. Poe moved to multiple cities and was trying to promote his poems. His final city was Baltimore where he was found dead.
Since Edgar Allan Poe has died there has been no evidence or proof of how he died. There are many different theories on how Poe had died; my thought is that he was killed by cooping during the election times. “Poe was discovered on election night outside Gunner’s Hall, a pop-up polling station for the day’s events” (Thompson). Cooping was a process that rigged the elections, people would be kidnapped and drugged on substances and forced to vote for whoever there kidnappers wanted them too. They were dressed in different clothes so they could be incognito and vote multiple times at several different polls. There was no autopsy performed so there is no proof on how he died. The cooping theory would make the most sense due to multiple deaths caused by overdose. He was also found in different clothes like I stated above, outside of a poll hall. When the elections would come around before there were electronic booths crooked politicians could rig the elections by hiring people to either force people to vote for said nominee or to bring them into the “coop” which is where the hired men would kidnap people, dress them up in strangers clothing, drug them, beat them, do anything needed to make them follow orders of voting for the nominee they were hired by.
