The Controversy With Animal Testing Animal testing is more of a problem than some believe. Some people believe it is okay to use animals as their test subjects, while others have been trying to convince people that there are alternatives to using animals that will work just as well. “It’s not testing cosmetics. It’s trying to save my life” (Kopp and Camosy 48) said Eileen Youtie who is fighting cancer. Eileen is paying over $30,000 so tests can be done on an animal before the doctors use the drugs on her (48). This is one of the many people who believe animals are an extraordinary test subject for products that will be used on people. “More than 25 million animals are used in U.S. laboratories each year” (Kopp and Camosy 48). “Some promising research will likely be slowed, or perhaps even halted altogether”, said Kopp and Camosy about the effect of not using animals and finding other methods (50). Whether it be the difficulty of switching methods or the stubbornness of the people, some still do not want to switch from animal testing to a different method. Some believe testing products on animals is an expedient idea because animals are closest in similarity to humans, so we will get the optimum and most information from the reaction of the …show more content…
Maybe it is the fact that they believe any other method would slow down research because animals have the most similarity to humans and not using animals would require time to find something as sufficient, or maybe they do not want to find an alternative because they believe using animals has the best outcome. There is another side to this issue. Animals do not need to be harmed so we can have reassurance before we use the product ourselves. There are other ways to test products that do not involve harming or killing an animal in the

One alternative is to use human tissues instead of animals, for testing and cosmetics. If products are being made for humans, it would be best to use the primary source it is being used for. " Humans and animals differ too much to make animal research useful” (James-Enger, 1998:1) If this alternative goes in place and is successful it will decrease the millions of animals being killed or injured for the research each year. If this method can be mastered, it will be the best alternative for animal testing. If scientist can use human tissues to develop test models, they will be able to collect more accurate data; which will allow them to produce safer medicines and cosmetic products.…
