Rough Draft Essay 4 Advertising is a valuable resource when it comes to presenting information and providing an emotional response from its viewers. Arguably, no other entertainment industry uses advertising as much as the film industry. Movie posters are released for nearly every movie with the hope that it will strike the eye of the viewer. Film companies aim to appeal to the emotion, which is the definition of the word pathos, ethos, which is through ethical appeal, or logos, which is through logic and reasoning. An example of a movie poster used to appeal to viewers is for the movie, The Purge. This movie was released in 2013 and is about an annual day where crime is permitted, allowing citizens to release stress and anger from their lives. …show more content…
To begin, the text does not pop out to the reader right away. It does not have color that stands out and does not invite the viewer in. Small, dim text sets the dark scene and mood for the advertisement. However, on the top left of the poster, it mentions that the movie is from the same producer of Paranormal Activity and Sinister. If a person were familiar with examples of scary movies, they would know that Paranormal Activity and Sinister are both horror films. Mentioning those two films causes a person to feel the same scared, emotional response watching The Purge as if they were about to watch the other two horror films. Another way the text is used to create an emotional response is by including the phrase, “survive the night,” in dark lettering beneath the main title of the movie. This phrase creates a spooky feeling for viewers and is not usually associated with pleasant feelings. Typically, warm and bright colors are associated with happy emotions. Examples of colors that are inviting are bright blues, reds, yellows etc. In the case of The Purge movie poster, one does not experience these types of welcoming colors. This movie poster does not contain many colors at all. The main shade of the advertisement is dark black, with only a couple of bright spots. Without knowing any detail of the movie, the use of only dark colors indicates the movie will be some type of horror film. The advertisers of the movie also used these types of colors and lighting because they do not want to confuse the viewers. This tactic is used to be straightforward with anyone that experiences the movie so that they can prepare themselves for what they are about to see. From examples in the past, dark colors, such as black, have always been coupled with frightening emotions. An example would be the generalization that many people around the world are scared of being alone in the dark. Darker colors have this effect on viewers.
