The teacher announced, “Class, get a laptop out and begin working.” This is not something that was said in a classroom in the 1950s. However, this is a typical statement made in a modern classroom. Technology is rapidly advancing and making its way into every aspect of a person’s daily life. Technology in the classroom is benefiting the education system which can be seen by how technology in education works and who it benefits. Education reform has been happening since schools began. Controversies about technology in the classroom go back to when televisions were introduced into the classroom. In the 1960s a professor from MIT, Seymour Papert, collaborated with psychologist Jean Piaget to develop Logo Programming Language for children. Suzie Boss describes the benefits of the Logo Programming program, “They not only gained deeper understanding of geometry concepts along with programming expertise but also showed an engagement in learning that's rare in more traditional, drill-and-practice classroom activities.” (Boss). Then, in 1972, people questioned the handheld calculator in the classroom. Yet, a handheld calculator is a staple in almost every classroom in every school in America now. Teachers are able to use interactive boards to enhance their lessons. They can use PowerPoints, videos, or notes or look up information. Teachers are no longer restricted to their knowledge and the teacher’s guide. They are able to look up and access so many resources, and the students are able to do the same. Incorporating technology in the classroom is not designed as a replacement for teaching. Instead, it is designed to enhance the teaching. Teachers can use technology to give the students access to new information, tools to improve their learning and motivate the
