It’s characteristic for most people to automatically jump to the conclusion that all stem cells come from an aborted fetus. Well, this is not true, and this is where the controversy begins. Stem cell research is the study of cells within the body that can develop into another and completely different cell during life, for example a stem cell that was used to create your skin as a skin graft, could now be constructing cells in your blood or bone marrow. When it comes to an aborted fetus, there are not only cells within the fetus, but also within the placenta and the blood, that is contained within. Today’s scientists and the media, have made it an objective that Embryonic Stem Cells is the center and main focus of all Stem Cell Research, considering there are other varieties of stem cells out there. The scientific belief is that 14 days after the process of fertilization, the central nervous system is in place, and that the fetus has a heartbeat. If the stem cells are removed from an early embryo prior to 14 days, it cannot develop and become a human being, which is why the more popular argument has people thinking: “If the research is just discarding embryos that would be left to die, why not put them to use?” (Fox, N.D.) Most people believe that the science regarding stem cell research is ultimately “Playing God”, and resulting in threats that are made daily to the researcher and the preservation of human life, when in reality science and medical professionals are looking at every possibility for aiding “responsible” research in hopes to expand new treatments, and could probably improve the health of the human population.
