The Controversy Of Democracy In The United States

Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The USA is a democratic republic where people decide who is in charge (the democratic part), then the people elected decide what to do (the republic part). Democracy is considered more fair than other governments. Voting is a good way to establish legitimacy for a leader because they can argue their right to rule on the grounds of being elected. This promotes political stability. Democracies often have smoother transitions of leadership compared to other governments. Democracies are better at revealing corruption because opposing parties are constantly trying to expose flaws of their opposition. Democracy is a good safety valve because if a citizen doesn�t like something they can simply vote for someone who opposes that in the next election. …show more content…
Democracy makes citizens feel like they�re voice counts. Since democratic governments elect people for terms leaders tend to focus on short-term goals and not long-term goals. Leaders are more likely to only care about the majority or even try to harm the minority. Democracies tend to not cope as well in certain cultures compared to others. Less things get done in a democracy than in autocratic governments. A fully functioning democracy depends on an educated population and education can easily be corrupted. Democracy tends to pander to the individual for votes instead of doing what�s best for the country. Money is often wasted on elections instead of on the betterment of the country.
