The Controversy In Basketball Sports

Decent Essays
I am sick and tired of competitive parents at sporting events. The reason behind my topic is because of all the basketball games I have took part in, there are always those parents who feel they have to shout their opinions. Basketball isn’t the only event where this occurs, but many other competitive sports like softball, volleyball, soccer, and even track. These events were made in order for the kids to have fun and enjoy the sport, but some people take it to a whole new level. There have been instances where a parent would yell rude and uncivil things to not only the refs, but also the players. The refs took care of the problem immediately and removed the impolite fan from the crowd. You can be competitive without being rude in many ways

Some of the questions that were answered are why there is uneven ratio of blacks to whites in the media and sports, and the impact of this. Although Ratchford discusses the relationship between sports and racism, he does not explain the consequences…

    3) a) The NCAA, led by Walter Byers, created the cultural understanding that college sports is a commercial consumption and that colleges can benefit financially from having top performing athletes. He did this by implementing regulations in order to segregate professional sports from amateur sports. In addition, while the colleges had athletic programs that generated revenue, the rules assisted with limiting the cost of having athletes on the team, thus increasing profit. The rules that are set by the NCAA are meant to preserve and reproduce the socially constructed notions of what it means to be a student athlete and what it means to be a professional athlete.…

Another interesting point that Kaliss mentioned in his book is that racial integration in sports can also influence other people watching and not just the athlete playing. Sports in a way can influence the stereotype and the beliefs of others. He mentioned that athletes are able to create a space that temporarily adjourned people’s conviction (Kaliss 174). In a way, when people are engrossed with the play that the athletes show, fans will always cheer them on regardless of the skin color, race or gender. In my primary source, the movie trailer of “Remember the Titans”, we observed a scene where the fans are all cheering for the football team even though the one who scored the point was a black athlete.…

Moreover, the obsession to play sports in these communities at an extremely young age is the norm and the pressure to excel is demanding (Anderson 369).…

f banning name calling in high school sports really violates freedom of speech, as Steve Trevelise argued in an article then I guess many other of my fundamental freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights are being violated. Trevelise’s reasoning for yelling crude, derogatory remarks at other players as being a fundamental human right is hilariously bogus. The implementation of this law by New Jersey officials was not to limit the players or the coaches or the audience’s freedom of speech, but to limit the violence occurring during and after games. Trevelise also states that many fought and died so that you can have [freedom of speech].Our ancestors did not solely fight in wars so that anyone can frivolously toil away yelling lewd remarks toward the players.…

    1) Functionalist Theory focuses on the ways that social structures influence action and relationship in the social worlds. Sports are an inspiration because it contributes to an individual and groups by bringing everybody together by sharing cultural values. An example of the functionalist theory is that sports organizations have a hierarchy system where everyone plays a role interconnected from top to bottom. That means everybody from ownership, to coaches, players, and all employees need to co-exist and work together as a cohesive unit. Working together by instituting core values where people respect themselves and others is functional; where as being disruptive will have negative influences that is dysfunctional.…
