The lap of luxury is not miles away on a coastal sea. Of course, it is in a modern American dorm room, complete with bathroom and expensive food services. The times of studying are long gone when students could instead participate in Nudity Week and simply email professors instead of attending class. These are just some of the examples Tom Nichols utilizes while taking a firm stance on the structure of universities and the students of today. In The Death of Expertise, the chapter “Higher Education: The Customer is Always Right” is where author Tom Nichols, US Naval War College Professor of National Security Affairs, conveys his thoughts on today’s system of higher education by utilizing strategies such as ethical appeals, as well as fallacies…
Education serves as a constituent upon which we construct ourselves as a society politically, socially and economically. However, the extent of a good education varies depending on one’s circumstantial influences. Students often find themselves accepting a romanticized outlook on what they are told defines a good education. In the classroom, pupils find themselves blindly memorizing formulas, reciting phrases and mind jotting dates and times to no avail. A good education comprises an ongoing conversation between student and teacher wherein a desire is incited to explore creative avenues with the informational foundation provided.…

Judging a book by it's cover, or comparing someone's education by one certain criteria, I believe is a mistake. We are all different, individuals have various strengths and weaknesses. Many people enjoy book smarts and good test taking skills, while others are more suitable in common sense and decision making situations. Kohn's example, in his opening paragraph concerning his ex-wife shows a great illustration of this. I agree with Kohn that we can't attempt to fit the masses into a single system to judge our education level.…

The author does a good job of presenting her points in a way that played on both the logical and emotional appeals of the reader. She does a wonderful job of making clear to the reader her passion for the subject, and her genuine concern for the education of America’s youth if a change is not made. The only way that the author was lacking was in her lack of hard facts. As well as her lack of presentation of differing viewpoints. “The Essentials of a Good Education” is a well-written, thought provoking piece about a couple issues facing the modern public education…
“Education has been shaped by a concern about economic readiness and competitiveness.” Mike Rose stated in his excerpt. Rose’s main idea about “Why School” is not only based on socio economics, standard of schooling, but also focused on how to give students, educators and parents a better system for education that’s beneficial for the whole society of the United States. As an example, Mike came from the working class who has achieved financial mobility through schooling, he knew in fact that education and economic well-being is closely linked. Schools are very important for students. In school, we can learn a lot of things, but students need the right teachers and the material to be successful in life and for a better education. Jean Anyon in “Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work” shows that in some schools they don’t have the right teachers or material because of the economy or the neighborhood the schools are located. Also low-income people do not get the same education as people with a good economy.…
People all round the country have been given false hope of a good education while being scammed out of their money. In the article “Leveling the Field”, Christopher Beha exposes this corrupt business by sharing his experiences. As a senior in high school about to embark on the next chapter of my education, I found this article very intriguing and informative. As I read through Beha’s discoveries I found myself in agreement with the author more times than not. He makes valid claims about pressing issues in present day…
Education is such an essential and fundamental element in our lives. Throughout education, we acquire knowledge, learn what people before us have discovered or written and undoubtedly carve our own thinking the way we have been thought. In the article "Education", Ralph Waldo Emerson, a renowned lecturer and visionary thinker, expresses how education that is being adopted in our civilization does more harm than good for the students. He builds up this claim by first presenting a paradox connecting "Genius and Drill", in which one cannot function without the other.…

The concept of education is how to learn, understand material, and knowledge that is taken in. Through education certain values and beliefs are developed. These beliefs, habits, and skills shape a student’s character. There are two controlling factors that come into play when discussing the concept of education; one is the teacher and the other is the student. As illustrated in Richard Feynman’s article, “O Americano Outra Vez,” a student’s learning focus is overwhelmingly influenced by the teaching style they are subject too.…
How would you define someone who is well-educated? Would you base your definition and judgement based off of the school a person went to, or the highest level of degree in which they received? Is a person smart and intelligent because of the grades they received on assignments? Or would you base a person’s smartness off of their ability to memorize facts and relay them to you? In the past I have gotten straight A’s and numerous academic awards.…
