The Controversial Issue Of Violence And Exploitation In Movies

Improved Essays
Movie from Christian director may contain violence and sexual behavior, and this can be a controversial problem. Brian Godawa says that there are exhortation and exploitation in movies that distinguish the concept of the movie (Godawa 49-51). Some movies contain the sinful behavior such as rape, violence, and slavery just to maximize the entertainment of the movie, then this is the example of exploitation in movies. However, there are movies showing violence and sexual behavior not to encourage it but to inculcate a sense of morality to people, then it is the example of exhortation in movies. Therefore, when violence and sexual behavior is included in order to tell it is wrong, then it is not bad. Even the Bible contains the violence and sexual …show more content…
One of the famous story of David is his battle scene with giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17:51). There is a violence in war, and to represent the war scene, direct has to put violence scene, but it is not to encourage people to do violence action. He is just showing the historical event. Also, David took Bathsheba, who is a married woman (2 Samuel 11). He used his power to take a woman, who has a husband. David sent Uriah, husband of Bathsheba, in the battle field and had sex with her, so she pregnant David’s child. David ended up planning to kill Uriah that sent him in the front line of the battle. Uriah died and David took his wife. This is sexual crime. The Bible, which is a holy scripture, contains adultery and murder, and those are sinful behaviors. However, what is important here is, the Bible never encourages these behaviors, but clearly says that these are wrong and never be performed. The movie can have these sinful behaviors, but the Christian movie director should clearly say that those violence and sexual behavior are wrong and should not be performed. He should guide godly way of dealing those sinful behaviors in the …show more content…
Paul says that “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 5:10). It means that God’s quality can be seen clearly in His creation. Therefore, movie can also show God’s eternal power and divine nature to people in society. It is difficult for churches to approach to non-believers these days because Christianity lose its authority. Because of the few Christians wrong behavior, people in the society see all Christians negatively. This makes churches and Christians to share the gospel difficult. However, the movie is a great way to approach to non-believer because they do not have repulsion on the movie. This is also the reason for Christians to make good movie. When non-believer watches the movie that contains the value and message of Christianity, it naturally and unconsciously permeates to them. They think they are just enjoying the movie, but Christians values are built in their mind. However, even though movie can be a tool to share the Christianity to non-believer, it does not actually give salvation. Therefore, Christians role is very important. After watching the movie, Christian friend can talk about the movie with his friend and naturally leads the conversation to Christianity. He can share the elements and values of Christianity and Christian message

I find myself agreeing with this reasoning’s the most because while there may be many things that are said on a daily basis that I may find offensive or reprehensible. Like its been said, in order to truly have FREE SPEECH, we sometimes have to allow the bad to come through even when we may not agree with it. That is the price of freedom of speech and it is a worthwhile cost, as many do not have those freedoms around the world. Another point that is made in the film that I find myself also resonating with is when Woody Harrelson begins on his speech about how sexually explicit material supposedly corrupts the youth while politicians start these wars. How spilling your guts and killing is heroic, yet sex is obscene.…

David was in one of the highest places of power when he sexually assaulted Bathsheba, being the king. Power corrupts people. Power is intoxicating, even to those, like David, who were once great men. Power, for whatever reason, can change people in such a way that they may once be one of the most humble and caring people around, but once they gain power they no longer care about others and how they may be hurting them. Instead, they start to only care about themselves, their wants, and even their reputations and ability to maintain their…

The court also stated that the SLAPS test applies in this case. The SLAPS test declares, “material must lack any serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value” (Trager et al., p.505). The appellate court seems to have correctly applied the Miller test in this case, however it is important to note that it is difficult to define what the “average” person would find sexually explicit which could raise some issues. This film would most likely…

in Grønstad 130). Grønstad’s findings lend support to this claim, also stressing that “the construction of a new viewing position for the audience of film violence” was a valuable achievement, especially in Peckinpah’s films (154). Even so, the shocking illustrations happened to be perceived as a controversial matter. Especially, by mainstream viewers and critics, who thought that violence is acceptable only “as long as it takes place within a clearly defined moral setting that contains the…

Unfortunately, children watch movies as entertainment just as adults would, which could potentially expose them to this mature content. Hence, it is necessary for the MPAA to rate movies which include five different ratings (G, PG, PG-13, R, NR-17). Children that watch violent or sexual films tend to be affected by the content in which they are watching. In fact, “In the largest international review of more than 1000 studies...researchers concluded that there is a positive association between violent entertainment and aggressive behaviour” (Browne 2005). In other words, when children watch violence in movies they tend to reenact this violence especially if it is the “good guy” in the movie that is violent.…

Disregarding God’s design and plan for human relationships, their relationships with each other became distorted and perverse. Paul says, “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.” (Romans 1:26-27) God’s perfect design for sex is naturally between a man and a woman.…

It comes to no surprise that the Western isn’t the most progressive genre when it comes to the topic of sex. Staking itself on historical accuracy, films of the genre generally portray sex as an act only to be performed by a married couple. The genre also portrays sex in another, more sinister light. Via the moral precepts of the mid 1900’s Hollywood, any instance of sex outside of this accepted institution had to be penalized, mainly in the form of death for the guilty party.…

It may seem as if this type of film has nothing to offer other than violence and gore. For example, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre tells the story of five teenagers that get stranded in rural Texas at their grandparents’ old house. All of them end up wandering to the house next door, which harbors cannibals that end up killing all but one of them. However, most of these deaths are short and do not occur until the latter half of the film. Yet because this film manages to encompass the abject, viewers are disturbed or uneased when watching the transgression of boundaries we may not be aware…

While David Fincher’s work spans many genres and touches on many themes, his darkest films prove to be the most interesting. Central to all of these films is religion, whether it be actual organized religion or a symbolic form of religion. Yet, Fincher does not deal with religion in a very typical way. Instead, he chooses to deal with religion through various treatments and depictions of violence, using many techniques, such as shots, camera angles, and cuts, to highlight the violence in the films and draw attention to its cause and effect relationship with religion. In Se7en (1995) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Fincher investigates religion as the cause of violence, while in Fight Club (1999) he investigates religion forming…

What I have learned its either you’re either for it and all it represents with seeing Christ suffer like no other film has done to date or you’re against it and simply hate the violence and are one of those who say it’s too ‘pornographic” and has too many extreme images to watch but just remember if you’re a Christian and you saying that you better re-evaluate your life. One thing I have learned about this film “The Passion of the Christ” one theme that I have realized now is that, after all the reviews and negatives from the film and all the hate against the movie you can tell this film messes with you physiologically. It really can get inside you especially if people are reacting the way they have been throughout the years from watching this film you know its…
