Hegemonic systems are impacting our society in great deals. Racism is a widespread controversial issue that does not seem to disappear. The issue is still much alive and is growing. Racism is the thought that one race is superior over another. Racism is sometimes only discussed when dealing with blacks and whites but a lot of other races have encounter racism as well. Due to the growing influence of the media, racism has evolved. As a major part in today's society, the media plays a critical role with knowledge we obtain. They provide us with definitions, images, and idea from their perspective.
The media often portrays young african american men as ‘’thugs’’ and ‘’gangsters’’. Movies such as Boyz in the Hood and Menace II Society are very popular for doing so. These movies appear of a variety of cable channels and are very visible to everyone with a television . People will watch these movies where black men participate in criminal activities and gangs, and they will adopt that portrayal. A lot of people do not feel comfortable addressing racism because of the emotional reaction they think it might give off. Many schools avoid the topic of racism or only touch the surface. Small children in elementary and middle should be exposed and informed on the history which is still very much present right now in their lives. You can not change the past but you can be informed about it and with that knowledge change the future. If kids or anybody is not aware of their history, how will they know if they are being discriminated? People are blinded to racism being in action towards them because of their lack of knowledge. The only way this unfair practice will be solved is if people are informed. Information should not come from the media’s perspective but from actual text and reliable
