The topic of abortion is currently one of the most controversial issues. The 1973 supreme court ruling of Roe v. Wade allowed for women to legally obtain abortions throughout their entire pregnancy, however, conditions were put into place that allowed for states to regulate abortions during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The right to have an abortion is protected under the constitution’s 14th amendment which protects the basic rights of citizens. This ruling has left our country divided in half by those who are for and against abortion. Those who oppose Roe v. Wade are referred to as pro-life and those in agreement are pro-choice.

Abortion is a safe procedure when it is performed within the first trimester. By law, women can only receive an abortion within the first twelve weeks of their pregnancy. This is because the risk of complications increases significantly after the first trimester. Most abortions are done at home by taking a medication that makes the body mimic a miscarriage. Often times when women are denied the right to abort, the opt for illegal abortions. Illegal abortions are not performed to the proper medical standards. This causes many complications and could even result in death.

If a female decides that she does not want to carry a pregnancy to term, that is her prerogative. It is a decision that will solely affect her life, so she she be the one to make it. Some women are raped, resulting in a pregnancy. Pro-Life advocates argue that the resulted fetus should not be aborted because it is innocent and aborting it will be punishment, however, they do not put into consideration the women’s emotional and mental state. Another reason women get abortions, is if there is something medically wrong with the fetus. Continuing a pregnancy when there is something medically wrong with a fetus can result in can be harmful to the mother. Controversially, the majority of women who opt for abortion are unstable and do not have the means to raise a child. Most that fall into this category are teenage or young mothers. They do not have the financial or emotional capacity to properly raise a child. Mothers of unwanted children have higher chance of living below the poverty
