Abortion in the United States has been, and remains one of the most controversial issues in our culture, religion, and politics. Abortion is an intentional termination of a human pregnancy; performed during the first twenty four weeks of the fetus. Abortion has two types of treatments: medical, and surgical. In the early 20th century, abortion was illegal, and it was punishable with jail time. Since 1973, the supreme court in Roe v. Wade established that abortion is a women’s right. Today, the percentage of people that are against, and in favor of abortion are almost the same. On February 18, 2016, Pope Francis said: “Abortion is not the lesser of two evils. It is a crime. It is to throw someone out in order to save another. That’s what the Mafia does. It is a crime, an absolute evil.” At the same time, people who are Pro-choice have many reasons to be pro-abortion too. Some of those reasons are: abortion is the women’s right, “being a mother is an option;” a woman is more than a fetus, personhood begins when the fetus is viable; banning abortion, risk illegal abortion; rape, and incest abortion can avoid women carrying the rapist’s baby.
I am almost thirty years old, and one of my biggest dream is to be a mom. I cannot imagine the blessing of having a baby growing inside of me, since day one. Depending on the nutrients that I will consume, on the air that I will breathe, feeling everything that I will feel, and recognizing my voice every time that I will speak. At the same time, I cannot imagine the feeling of a woman that has been raped by a family member, or stranger.
