In order to analyze the content and relational aspect of this interaction correctly it will be important to try to identify the type of relationship Mike and Linda have since the story does not clearly states the type of relationship they have. This is important because the content and relational messages are measure by the type and stage of the relationship between the parties communicating.
It will be safe to assume that Mike and Linda have a close and intimate relationship, probably are husband and wife, since leasing a car together is not something people normally do with just anyone. In marriage the level of intimacy requires that any issues regarding financial information is disclosed and discussed before any decisions are made since that can affect both partners in the relationship as individuals not only as a couple. In this particular case it does not look like Mike had disclose to Linda any information regarding the bill he received from the dealer for excess mileage and the arrangement that resulted on the $30 invoice he had immediately paid. That information was only self-disclosed to Linda by Mike but only after she was actually contacted by the collection agency.

Practicing self-awareness would require for both to know how their thoughts, emotions and behaviors affect others and to manage themselves so that the other person can feel as important part of the conversation. This could also helped them be more comfortable with themselves so they can relate to other with genuine confidence and kindness. Self-awareness would have allowed them to let the other communicate what is important to them without letting their personal issues complicate the interaction. This give them the ability to become better listeners and to communicate in a deeper level making the other feel valued and
