The Construction Estimating Institute’s home office in Sarasota, FL has recently seen more workers than usual. As few as five individuals were employed four years ago- now there are more than 20 and the company is looking to fill a couple more positions. There are two clear supervisors who lead the office and two departments. The President looks over the Continuing Education department and the Vice President is over the DBE programs and all the state government contracts. Both the President and the Vice President are democratic leaders in their day to day office behavior. Hackman and Johnson (2013) describe democratic leaders as leaders who “engage in supportive communication that facilitates between leaders and followers” and explains that they encourage participation from all parties involved. Both the President and the Vice President work hard to hold meetings to include the entire staff on any changes and are very communicative. The President and Vice President share leadership over the marketing team as they do work for both departments. CEI does have some stand out advantages. Initially, the …show more content…
During the past six months, CEI has needed to determine if they wished to bid on the contracts they currently have for renewal and if they want to bid on other states’ contracts that are up for bid. This may seem like a simple decision initially, however, there are many aspects that need to be considered. For instance, the company is located in Florida, there was discussion of potentially bidding for California’s DBE contract. This would cause complications and difficulties in many areas. First, California is four hours behind Florida making any business administration difficult to maintain. Second, would the company hire workers who are in California, or fly Florida employees out for conferences, classes, and seminars? Either way, that could become a costly decision if not navigated in the appropriate
